The suction strainer is a valve which is installed at the suction line's inlet to prevent the penetration of dirt. After the pumping operation has been completed, suction strainers with integrated foot valve prevent the suction line from running empty.

The suction strainer is the first line of defence in any pump-based lubrication system. Mounted at the pump inlet inside the reservoir, it prevents coarse particles — metal chips, dirt, and scale — from entering the pump. Without a suction strainer, even a small piece of debris can score the pump gears or plunger, causing rapid wear and pump failure.

Unlike high-pressure in-line filters, the suction strainer operates at low pressure (suction side) with a coarse mesh, typically 60–150 microns, designed to pass lubricant freely while stopping particulate matter large enough to damage the pump.
