Description
A float switch mounts inside an oil reservoir and rises or falls with the oil level. At a fixed set point the float changes the switch contact state, giving an electrical low-level signal without needing any power supply of its own, the switching action is driven purely by the float's mechanical position, so there is no calibration to set during installation.
Because it has no moving electronics and no wear-prone contacts in the liquid path, a float switch is a low-maintenance, drop-in way to add a low-oil alarm or pump cut-out to a reservoir. Float Switch in a Lubrication System
In centralized lubrication systems, the float switch is mounted inside the oil reservoir and monitors the lubricant level. When the oil drops below the minimum level set point, the float descends and the switch contact changes state, triggering a low-level alarm on the machine control panel or stopping the pump to prevent it running dry.
Running a lubrication pump with an empty or near-empty reservoir causes the pump to cavitate, wear rapidly, and fail, and leaves all lubrication points starved of oil. The float switch is a simple, reliable safeguard that prevents this. SP Engineers supplies both horizontal (FSH) and vertical (FSV) float switch configurations to suit different reservoir geometries. It is always used alongside a pressure switch in a complete motorized lubrication unit.
