Centralized Grease Lubrication System: Complete Buying Guide

A centralized grease lubrication system feeds a metered dose of grease from a single pump and reservoir to every grease point on a machine automatically, replacing manual greasing with an automated schedule. Grease is the right lubricant, rather than oil, wherever bearings run at slow to medium speed, sit outdoors or in wet and dusty conditions, or carry heavy shock loads. Presses, rolling mills, conveyors, cranes, and mobile plant chassis are the typical applications. This guide walks through the decisions involved in specifying one.

Step 1: Count Your Lubrication Points

Point count is the single biggest factor in which pump type and distribution method makes sense.

  • 1–20 points, low duty: a manual grease pump is often sufficient for small or infrequently-run machines where automation isn't justified.
  • Up to a few dozen points, continuous duty: a motorized multiline radial lubricator delivers metered grease to each point from a single compact pump body.
  • 50-500+ points, spread over distance: a dual line system is built for exactly this: large plants like steel mills and cement plants where lubrication points are spread across a wide area.

Step 2: Choose a Distribution Method

Once lubricant leaves the pump, it needs to be metered out to each individual point. Two approaches dominate:

Progressive distributor blocks meter a fixed dose to each outlet in a strict rotating sequence, and the entire block stalls if any single outlet is blocked, a mechanical fault indicator built into the design. Dual line systems alternate grease delivery between two supply lines under high pressure (up to 250 kg/cm²), so a fault on one line doesn't halt the other. This is the standard for large point counts spread over long distances, where a single progressive block run would be impractical.

Step 3: Select the Grease Grade

Centralized grease systems are typically rated up to NLGI 2 grease. Check your bearing manufacturer's specification and your operating temperature range before choosing a grade, since a grease too stiff for the ambient temperature won't feed reliably through small-bore metering cartridges, and one too soft can migrate away from the bearing under vibration.

Step 4: Add Monitoring

An automated system that fails silently is barely better than manual greasing. At minimum, specify a pressure gauge for a visual check on system health, and for unattended operation add a pressure switch and float switch so low pressure or an empty reservoir triggers an alarm automatically rather than being discovered on the next manual round.
